Karen Thomas Smith’s ministry is a living picture of faithful presence, patient bridge-building, and courageous pastoral care in Morocco. At Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, she serves as chaplain to the ecumenical Christian community, gathering students and faculty for worship and prayer, preaching, offering counsel, and helping sustain Christian life in a setting where believers come from many traditions and nations.

On campus, Karen also helps nurture interfaith understanding. In her work alongside student leaders, she supports programs that move beyond polite tolerance into genuine relationship, creating space for learning, conversation, and shared service among people shaped by different faiths and cultures. This is holy work in a divided world, and it is also practical. It gives students tools they can carry into future careers and communities where difference is not a threat but an invitation to neighbor-love.

Beyond the university, Karen carries significant leadership for the wider church. She serves as president of the Église Évangélique au Maroc and has also held leadership connected to the church’s refugee and migrant ministry, representing communities that practice hospitality as a core expression of the gospel. She is also connected to Al Mowafaqa, the ecumenical institute in Rabat devoted to theological formation and dialogue.

Living Faith is grateful for Karen’s witness, and we pray for her strength, wisdom, and protection as she teaches, leads, travels, and cares for God’s people.
